One Year In Ukraine

1021 Sasha and Artyom

I really tried to convince myself to buy a DSLR before our year-long mission trip to Ukraine last year. I finally decided to just stick with my faithful point-and-shoot because I was afraid I would spend way too much time focusing on my pictures, and not on my work (and I didn't technically have enough money for it yet). Now, as I feel like I am being buried alive in all of the information there is to learn about professional digital photography, I'm glad I made that decision. [Read More...]

So my Canon A620, Adobe Photoshop Elements 5, and Scott Kelby's book (Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 For The Digital Photography) made the trip without a fancy new camera. In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't have that new camera. I would have spent way too much time trying to learn the camera and the software, and starting with Elements was a great way to get introduced to Photoshop. Having a small camera also helped with keeping as inconspicuous as Americanly possible.

The two guys in the pictures are two very good friends of mine. I've known the one on the left since he was ten, and the one on the right since he was fourteen. They had recently just gotten involved in the Russian version of Facebook and they wanted me to take some pictures of them. This was one of the last shots of our makeshift shoot, and it was one I didn't want to take. I told them there was not enough light and the pictures weren't going to turn out. They didn't care about light.

So, getting in a crouched position and bracing the camera on my knee, I took this shot. And I loved it. And I still love it. And it brings back memories of a fabulous year spent in a magnificent place.

My wife and I have a passion for missions, and we hope to get back onto foreign soil within the next few years.

That's really cool Brandon. I like the contrast. Artistically I think it would be a lot better with just Sasha, but sometimes content has to come first. I miss those guys.
